Venerable Than Hur, the Founder

The Patriarch, Than Hur, his last name is Kim originally from Kyung Ju. Ta Sung is his ordination name but later he was called Than Hur, which his patriarch gave him at the time of attaining enlightenment. He was born in the town of Kim Je, the north of Gen La Providence in the 15th of January 1913, according to the lunar calendar. He studied Confucianism under his father until the age of 14. Since the age of 15, he studied the philosophy of Lao-z and Zhuang-z and started his life as a monk under the teaching of the master, Bang Han Ahm at Sang Won-Sa in the Gang Won Providence at the age of 22 in September 1934. After reading the Sutras and dedicating himself to meditation at the Sang Won Sa in 1937, he attained the state of enlightenment, and his patriarch gave the name Than Hur. In 1951, when his patriarch, Han Ahm entered Nirvana, Than Hur dedicated himself to the translation of sutras to more comprehendible Korean, and to the education of many spiritual minds according to his patriarch¡¯s dying wishes. In addition, he founded a monastery at the Wol Jung-Sa in 1955, and dedicated himself the training and education of many Buddhists.

The Patriarch, Thanhur taught us that the focus of Buddhism is ¡®Mediation,¡¯ and not only to get rid of all of the imagined agonies in our mind, but also to seek the true wisdom of the Buddha, ¡®the True Mind¡¯. Furthermore, ¡®Seon is the mind of Buddha; refers to the practice of Meditation, and ¡®Gyoe¡¯ is the teaching of the sutras; thereby, he put a lot of emphasis on the harmony of Seon and Gyo at all time. On the other hand, continuously he concentrated on the translation of Sutras from 1961 to 1974, almost 14 hours a day. He translated almost 100,000 pages of manuscripts, and edited and published the sutras into 47 books. Every time he finished one publication, he lectured the main focus of the philosophy of the Sutras to the public. Foreseeing his entrance to Nirvana, the deceased Patriarch, Than Hur, soared at the Sangha age of 49 and the mundane age of 71. On the 5th of June in the year 1983 in the eyes of his patriarchs and other Buddhists, he passed away, saying, ¡°All Things Are Kept Silent.¡±
